Water-Soluble Sulphur Black, chemically designated as C.I. Solubilised Sulphur Black 1 (CAS 1326-83-6), represents a significant advancement in traditional sulphur dye technology. Unlike conventional sulphur black, which is insoluble in water and requires sodium sulphide for reduction, this modified variant has been pre-reduced during manufacturing. As a result, it dissolves directly in water without the need for additional reducing agents, simplifying the dyeing process considerably.

Physical and Chemical Properties

This dye typically appears as black granules or powder. It boasts excellent water solubility, reaching up to 160 grams per litre at 25°C. Its solutions are stable and can be directly applied. A major advantage is its good levelling properties and high wettability, which ensure uniform dye uptake without the common issue of "bronziness." Importantly, it eliminates the risk of "tendering"-the fibre weakening caused by residual sulphur compounds left by traditional methods.

Primary Applications

Water-soluble sulphur black is widely used in the continuous dyeing (padding) of cotton, viscose, and linen. It is particularly suitable for:

· Pad-dyeing processes in textile mills, where uniform, deep black shades are required.

· Leather dyeing, especially for chrome-tanned leather, offering deep penetration and good fastness.

· Mass pigmentation of viscose fibres during spinning.

Handling and Storage

The dye is hygroscopic. Therefore, it must be stored in sealed, dry conditions to prevent caking. Its user-friendly nature reduces chemical waste, making it a cleaner alternative in modern dyehouses, though proper oxidation and soaping after dyeing are still necessary for optimal wash fastness.
