Sulphur Black Manufacture
Sulphur Black (C.I. Sulphur Black 1) is the most widely used dye in the sulphur dye family, known as the "King of Black Dyes" for its deep black shade, low cost, and excellent lightfastness. It is primarily used for dyeing cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen, and viscose....
Description
The application scope and process adaptability of Sulfur Black.
Sulfur Black is primarily used for cellulose fibers, especially pure cotton, where it produces deep, cost-effective black shades with good wash and wet fastness. It is also applicable to viscose (rayon) and other regenerated cellulose fibers, though careful temperature control (80–85 °C) is needed to avoid uneven dyeing. For polyester/cotton blends, Sulfur Black only dyes the cotton component, so the polyester must be pre-dyed with disperse dyes to achieve a solid black.
In terms of dyeing processes, exhaust dyeing (batch) at 90–100 °C is common for knits, while continuous pad-steam is preferred for woven fabrics. Cold pad-batch is also possible but less reproducible.
Regarding chemical compatibility, Sulfur Black requires a reducing agent and alkali to form the soluble leuco form. Traditionally, sodium sulfide is used, but it produces odor and high sulfide waste. Eco-friendly alternatives like glucose + caustic soda or commercial reducing agents are increasingly adopted. The alkali is typically soda ash (pH 10–11); caustic soda should be used sparingly to avoid dye degradation. The balance between reducer and alkali directly affects the final blackness and shade stability. Any change in reducing agent requires laboratory trials to adjust the alkali and oxidation steps accordingly.
