Sulfur Black Used Dyeing On Cotton

Sulfur Black is one of the most commonly used and economical dyes for pure cotton fabric, especially for achieving a deep black shade. It offers a good balance of low cost, a relatively simple process, and good fastness to washing and light.

When applying it specifically to pure cotton, there are several key points that deserve extra attention:

· Thorough Pretreatment is Crucial: Raw cotton fibers contain natural impurities like waxes, pectins, and seeds. These must be completely removed through scouring and bleaching before dyeing. Failure to do so can lead to uneven dyeing or unsightly patches.

· Dyeing Temperature and Penetration: While the general process is similar to standard methods, reaching and maintaining 98°C is key for full absorption. For heavy-weight cotton fabrics (such as canvas or corduroy), the heating rate should be slower than for lightweight fabrics. This allows the dye enough time to penetrate the thicker yarns and fibers evenly.

· Anti-tendering is Mandatory: This is a non-negotiable final step for pure cotton. Without anti-tendent treatment, the fabric is at high risk of tendering (strength loss) during storage. This happens because residual sulfur on the fiber oxidizes to form sulfuric acid. A final bath with Urea or Sodium Acetate is essential to neutralize these acidic residues and protect the fabric's strength. After drying, the fabric must be allowed to cool down naturally before baling.

· Watch for Damage: If the finished fabric smells acidic or its strength seems compromised, it indicates the anti-tendering treatment was insufficient. You can neutralize it by treating the fabric at room temperature with a 1-2 g/L Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) solution.

· Eco-Friendly Alternative: Today, pre-reduced Sulfur Black (liquid form) is widely recommended. It eliminates the need for sodium sulfide in the dyehouse, which significantly reduces the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in the wastewater, making it a more environmentally friendly choice.
