Disperse Blue (Disperse Dye)
· What it is: A class of dyes that are essentially insoluble in water. For application, they are finely ground and mixed with dispersing agents to create a stable suspension of tiny particles in water.
· How it works: This water-based dispersion is used to dye synthetic fibers. Under high temperature and pressure, the dye particles sublime (turn into gas) and diffuse into the solid polymer fibers, such as polyester (PET), acetate, and nylon.
· Key Application: Primarily for textile dyeing. When you see a vibrant blue polyester shirt, dress, or curtains, it is almost certainly colored with a type of Disperse Blue dye.

Solvent Blue (Solvent Dye)
· What it is: A class of dyes that are soluble in non-polar organic solvents like alcohols, ketones, esters, fuels, and oils.
· How it works: The dye molecules dissolve completely in the solvent or oily medium, forming a true, transparent solution. They color the liquid or the solid material (like plastic) they are dissolved in.
· Key Applications: Used for coloring the solvent or product itself, not for dyeing textiles from a bath. Common uses include:
· Coloring fuels (e.g., gasoline, diesel for identification).
· Inks (e.g., for ballpoint pens, markers, flexographic printing).
· Staining metals and woods.
· Coloring plastics, waxes, lubricants, and polishes.
The Important Chemical Connection
Interestingly, many specific dyes share the identical core chemical structure. For example, the chemical compound known as Disperse Blue 14 is the same molecule as Solvent Blue 104.
The difference is in the final product formulation:
· The Disperse Blue version is milled with dispersants for use in water.
· The Solvent Blue version is purified for optimal solubility in organic solvents.
Why You Cannot Swap Them
You cannot use Solvent Blue to dye a polyester fabric in water because it won't disperse properly. Conversely, you cannot use Disperse Blue to make a clear ballpoint pen ink because its dispersants will cause cloudiness and clogging.
