Sulfur Blue BRN (C.I. 53440, CAS 1327-57-7) is a synthetic sulfur dye widely used in the textile industry. It appears as a dark blue-black powder and is insoluble in water. However, it becomes soluble in the presence of reducing agents such as sodium sulfide (Na₂S), which converts the dye into a water-soluble leuco form. This unique property makes it suitable for dyeing cellulosic fibers like cotton, linen, viscose, and hemp.
The "BRN" suffix indicates a specific shade - bluish-red with a subtle violet undertone, offering a rich, deep navy or grey appearance. Depending on manufacturing variations, the dye can produce either more greenish (BN) or reddish (RN) hues; BRN sits in between.
Dyeing Process
The application of Sulfur Blue BRN involves a reduction–oxidation mechanism. First, the dye is reduced in an alkaline sodium sulfide bath, forming the leuco compound, which dissolves and penetrates the fiber. After absorption, the fiber is exposed to air or treated with an oxidizing agent (e.g., hydrogen peroxide or sodium dichromate). This step reoxidizes the leuco dye back to its insoluble form, locking the color inside the fiber structure. As a result, Sulfur Blue BRN offers excellent wash fastness and moderate light fastness, making it ideal for durable textiles.
Applications and Advantages
This dye is primarily used for dyeing cotton yarns, denim, workwear, and industrial fabrics where cost-effectiveness and deep shades are priorities. It is often combined with yellow dyes to produce dark greys. However, the dyeing process requires careful control of temperature, pH, and chemical concentration to avoid fiber tendering (weakening) and ensure even color distribution.
Limitations
Sulfur Blue BRN is not suitable for wool or silk due to the harsh alkaline conditions required. Additionally, it has poor resistance to chlorine-based bleaches, and the reduction bath may produce unpleasant odors and environmental concerns due to sulfide content.
