Application of Water-Soluble Sulphur Black in Paper Dyeing

Water-Soluble Sulphur Black, a derivative of conventional Sulphur Black dyes, is widely utilized in the paper industry, particularly for producing solid black-colored boards and specialty papers such as black-core playing cards, photo mount boards, and wrapping paper. Unlike its use in textiles, which requires complex reduction-oxidation processes, the application in papermaking is significantly more straightforward, yet it requires precise chemical management.

Dyeing Mechanism and Process:

In paper pulp dyeing, the dye exhibits an affinity for cellulose fibers. The process typically involves adding the dye directly to the pulp slurry (hydropulper or mixing chest). For optimal results, the dye is used alongside a mordant or fixing agent-commonly Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) or aluminum sulfate (papermaker's alum). The dosage of Sulphur Black usually ranges from 6% to 10% based on the weight of the absolute dry pulp. To achieve a deep, jet-black shade without a reddish or bluish cast, the pH of the pulp suspension is critical; it is ideally maintained between 4.5 and 6.0. Under acidic conditions, the dye molecules aggregate properly onto the fiber surface, preventing "bleeding" or wash-off during the paper forming process.

Key Advantages for Paper:

1. High Color Strength: Compared to direct or acid black dyes, Sulphur Black provides a deeper, more economical black tone, making it cost-effective for mass production.

2. Lightfastness: Papers dyed with Sulphur Black exhibit excellent resistance to fading under UV exposure, which is essential for packaging materials.

Critical Challenges and Modern Solutions:

Traditional water-soluble Sulphur Black requires a reduction step using sodium sulfide to dissolve properly. If residues of sulfide remain in the paper, they can cause odor issues (rotten egg smell) and bronzing (a white powder or metallic sheen on the surface). Consequently, the industry is shifting toward "pre-reduced" or environmental-friendly liquid Sulphur Black. These modern variants are fully soluble without the need for additional reducing agents, eliminating sulfide residues and simplifying the process to a single addition step. Furthermore, for high-end applications like food packaging, it is crucial to ensure the selected Sulphur Black grade passes heavy metal restrictions (e.g., EU REACH standards).

In summary, while Water-Soluble Sulphur Black is a powerful tool for making black paper, successful application hinges on controlling the pH with aluminum compounds and, ideally, switching to odor-free, reduced liquid formulations to ensure safety and product quality.
